How to track QR codes, direct mail, flyers, and theater ads
Offline advertising is measurable when the campaign is designed for measurement before the flyer is printed or the theater creative is delivered.
You may not be able to identify every person who saw a postcard or screen ad. You can create a reliable path for comparing which channels generate visits, calls, forms, qualified conversations, and customers.
Give each channel a unique destination
Use a different URL for each placement, even when every URL loads the same landing page.
For example:
example.com/offer?src=flyerexample.com/offer?src=postcardexample.com/offer?src=theaterexample.com/offer?src=leavebehind
The src value identifies the campaign source. The page can store it in a hidden form field and include it in analytics events.
Keep source names short, readable, and consistent. Decide whether direct-mail, directmail, or postcard is the standard before campaigns launch.
Use QR codes as links, not artwork
A QR code should encode the full tracked URL for its channel. Test the actual printed proof, not only the image on a computer.
Before production:
- Scan with multiple phone types.
- Test from the expected viewing distance.
- Confirm sufficient contrast and clear space.
- Make sure the destination uses HTTPS.
- Verify the page loads correctly with the source parameter.
- Check that the code does not point through an account or shortener the business may lose.
Do not reuse one generic QR destination on every piece if you want channel-level reporting.
Continue the ad’s message
The tracked URL should lead to a focused campaign landing page, not automatically to the homepage.
A person who scans a theater ad has already seen a headline and offer. The landing page should repeat that core message, provide enough detail to build confidence, and make the next action obvious.
Track phone clicks and form success
Website analytics can record when someone taps a phone link. Use an event name and include the campaign source.
Similarly, track the successful form response—not merely a click on the submit button. A button click may still produce a validation error or failed request.
Useful event properties include:
- Campaign source
- Landing page
- Button location
- Service or offer
Phone-click tracking records intent, not a completed call. Treat it as a useful signal rather than a confirmed lead.
Pass source information into the form
Hidden fields can preserve:
- Campaign source
- Landing-page path
- Browser referrer
- Campaign or offer identifier
When the form is submitted, those values should appear with the lead notification or enter the lead-management system.
Do not rely only on an analytics report. The employee following up should be able to see that the inquiry came from a postcard or theater campaign.
Ask phone leads how they found you
Not every visitor will use the form, and not every phone call begins with a tracked tap. Add a simple source question to the call process:
“How did you hear about us?”
Use a consistent list of responses. Free-form answers such as “I saw something somewhere” are still useful, but standardized choices make reporting easier.
Avoid turning the first conversation into an interrogation. One brief question is enough.
Connect the source to lead outcomes
Traffic and scans show attention. Businesses need to understand what happened after that attention.
For each source, review:
- Landing-page visits.
- Phone clicks and successful forms.
- Qualified conversations.
- Opportunities created.
- Customers won.
- Revenue or project value when appropriate.
A channel with fewer inquiries may be more valuable if those inquiries are a better fit. This is why lead tracking from inquiry to customer matters.
Separate channel, campaign, and creative
“Postcard” identifies a channel, but you may run multiple postcard campaigns.
For more useful reporting, distinguish:
- Channel: postcard
- Campaign: fall-managed-it
- Creative or version: ashe-a
- Offer: free-15-minute-call
Start simple. Add detail only when the business will use it to make a decision.
Account for offline limitations
Offline attribution will never be perfect.
Someone may see a flyer, search the business name later, and call from the Google profile. A postcard may reinforce awareness created by another channel. Multiple people at one company may encounter different ads.
Use tracking to improve decisions, not to claim false precision. Compare patterns across enough time and volume, and combine analytics with the lead’s own explanation.
Build measurement before placement
NRT Growth Services connects direct-mail strategy, theater and display creative, landing pages, QR destinations, analytics events, lead tracking, and reporting.
If you are planning an offline campaign in Ashe County or the High Country, start a conversation with NRT before final production. We can help make sure the destination, source fields, and follow-up path are ready when the first person scans.
